Convicted Sex Offender Arrested In Homer

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

John Roger John Roger Meade - 09/16/02Meade looks like the kid next door. Without knowing he had been convicted in Union Parish and had served time in prison for contributing to the delinquency of a minor (performing sexually immoral acts), most people in Homer would have had no reason to fear his presence around their children. This changed last month when Meade, 24, was arrested by Homer Police officers for attempting to sexually molest two young girls, age 8 and 12, in a mobile home park off Dutchtown Road on January 18.

Although Meade's address was listed as Spearsville, he had moved to Homer last October and had been staying at the Jordan Crossing, a local shelter that offers help for people in need.

Rusty Ellis, who runs the Jordan Crossing, said their facility is more than a homeless shelter. They offer individuals a place to live in exchange for a commitment from an individual to change their lives. They must agree to live by a strict set of rules which includes no smoking, no drinking, no drugs, no cursing, and no sexual relationships. Residents must  attend church services and bible study classes regularly. The night Meade sneaked out of the Jordan, he had just returned from one of those Bible study classes.

Ellis said they were aware of Meade's background, but since his arrival in October, he had worked regularly, started a savings account, met regularly with his probation officer, and, until the night of January 18, had apparently not violated any of the rules at the Jordan.

The parent of one of the girls involved stated that Meade had somehow gained entrance to their home although their doors had been locked, and had managed to slip by their two dogs, a 60 lb. Pit Bull and a 25 lb. Miniature Doberman Pincher. The dogs were only awakened by the girl's screams after she woke to find Meade attempting to fondle her under the covers.

Claiborne Charity Begins Seventh Year

Seeking Sponsors For Annual Golf Tournament

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Those involved in Claiborne Charity, Inc. are amazed at the success their organization has had since it was formed in 1999. The first year when backers put up the money for their first golf tournament, they were unsure if they would turn a profit, but thanks to some outstanding sponsors they cleared $14,600 that year. The next year they more than doubled that amount with $34,500 and have steadily increased that amount each year since. And thanks to their financial success, as of February 2005, Claiborne Charity has been able to contribute more than $120,000 to help needy families and organizations in Claiborne Parish. George Tigner said this overwhelming response proves how compassionate the people in Claiborne Parish are, and how willing they are to help their neighbors in need.

Just ask Gussie Young, wife of Rev. Willie Young, Sr., pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. She had nothing but praises for Claiborne Charity. She said the organization has helped a number of families over the past six years, some who lost homes in fires and others who needed help for medical expenses.

"Claiborne Charity is concerned about people and their well-being," according to Mrs. Young. "They have given hope to several families who had lost hope; just by letting them know someone cares." Although they have pretty strict guidelines and do not approve every application, they are quick to respond in an emergency, providing immediate help for a family's needs. Those needs are their main objective. Race, religion or economic status is not a factor. Mrs. Young said, "Claiborne Charity has really had a positive impact on the community and the parish as a whole."

D.A.R.T. To Sponsor 5-K Run In February

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

The Domestic Abuse Resistance Team (D.A.R.T.) will sponsor a 5-k Run at Lincoln Park in Ruston on February 12. "The Heart for DART"  Run is a fundraiser for D.A.R.T.. Proceeds from the event will benefit all five parishes served by D.A.R.T.  Registration will begin at 8 AM.  D.A.R.T. is accepting tax-deductible sponsorships and sponsors will be included in all publicity surrounding the race. The cost to enter the race is $20. All checks should be made payable to DART and mailed to Marie Schwartz at 108 West Alabama, Ruston, LA 71270. Runners may pick up registration forms from Mary Ellen Gamble at the Claiborne Parish D.A.R.T. office or they can call her  for additional information at 927-2818.

D.A.R.T. was formed in 1995 to deal with domestic violence issues and now has offices and staff members in the parishes of Lincoln, Union, Jackson, Bienville, and Claiborne. In addition, each parish has formed a community coordinated response team composed of volunteers who help with fund-raising, education and support systems for the women and children in need of services.  As a private, non-profit organization, D.A.R.T is not funded by the federal government. It must rely upon grants, private contributions, and fundraisers to pay for staff members and services. These services include shelter, counseling, legal advocacy and children's services. Volunteers perform every type of service for the organization and for the families it serves, including transporting victims and their children, helping with child care, arranging for financial support when a family has to start over completely, and help in locating housing.  These are just a few of the countless jobs that volunteers do for D.A.R.T. and its families.

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, help is available at D.A.R.T. (Domestic Abuse Resistance Team). All information is strictly confidential. Call 927-2818 or 1-888-411-1333 after hours and weekends.

Ford Museum

MEMBERS AND GUESTS admire the completion of Phase II of the new exhibition being constructed at the Ford Museum, Claiborne Parish in the 1920s: The Oil Boom. The exhibition will feature aspects of the major fields in Claiborne Parish. Photographs and artifacts from the period will help tell the story of the changes that took place when liquid gold was discovered in 1919. Claiborne Parish's agrarian landscape soon became dotted with wooden derricks across the horizon. Many outsiders rushed to claim their part of the wealth. A sneak preview was held for the members and the corporate sponsors of the Ford Museum on Friday, January 20. The public grand opening will be Sunday, February 20 at 2 p.m., which will feature a free program discussing the significant changes that took place in the early 1920s due to the discovery of oil.
