40 Days Of Purpose Celebrated Sunday

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Members of the First United and Wesley Chapel Methodist Church celebrated the end of the spiritual growth campaign "40 Days of Purpose" on Sunday, April 4 with a luncheon at Homer City Hall. The  6-week campaign which included more than 2,800 churches of various denominations kicked off February 21 with a national simulcast where  Pastor Rick Warren, author of the book, The Purpose Driven Life, gave an overview of the study. Methodist Pastor David Dietzel said although the Methodists sponsored this campaign, it was truly a community effort with members of a number of area churches participating.

Dietzel said their attendance averaged 379 participants each week meeting in 31 small study groups, either in Sunday School classes or in host homes. He said their attendance at worship normally averages 240 for both churches, but during the "40 Day Campaign", their average attendance was over 320.

Besides members of First United Methodist and Wesley Chapel, participants included members of Calvary Baptist Church, Trinity Southern Methodist, First Presbyterian Church, United Methodist at Colquitt, Arizona United Methodist, and even a couple of ladies from First Baptist in Arcadia.

Other area churches who also recently participated in the 40 Days of Purpose study included First Baptist Church of Haynesville and First Baptist Church of Minden. Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Lisbon will begin the 40 Days Campaign on April 25.

Homer Town Council Hires New Town Clerk

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

The Homer Town Council met Monday, April 5. Mayor Huey Dean said the Town had received eight applications for the Town Clerk position. Two were from office employees Brandi Ware and Rita Mitchell. Dean said the three office employees had been doing a great job handling the work load. Other towns of similar size have only two or three office employees. He did not recommend anyone for the clerk position but suggested the Council consider hiring one of the office employees.

Councilman Thomas McDonald said the Town could save between $35,000 and $37,000 if they promoted one of the office employees to Town Clerk. Councilmen Billy Kirk Jenkins questioned whether it would be considered dual office holding. McDonald said office employees do not hold an official position, only the clerk and treasurer.

McDonald made a motion to hire Brandi Ware as town clerk at $9.50 per hour with a six month probation period. His motion was approved by a vote of 3-2, with McDonald, Jesse Ford, and Johnette Faulkner voting yes and Billy Kirk Jenkins and J. C. Moore voting no.

Man Arrested For Beating Boys With Gun

Homer Police officers J. T. Williams and Keith Ferguson responded to a call at the residence of Donald Grider, Sr. on East 4th in Buck Bottom at 6:15 PM Tuesday, March 23. Just after arriving at the scene, officers received a second call that the disturbance had moved to the home of Kalandra Wright on East 2nd Street near Piggly Wiggly, with reports a man was carrying a shotgun.

Within minutes officers were at the scene on East 2nd where they saw no fighting, but observed Grider standing beside his vehicle. They were advised by Kalandra's brother Shirmaine Wright that Grider had a shotgun. He pointed at three live shotgun shells lying in the yard.

According to police reports, the first call came from the Grider residence after Shirmaine Wright and two juveniles drove past the Grider house and reportedly threw sticks at his truck, breaking one of the rear windows.

Wright said his vehicle had been hit with bats and bricks when he drove through Buck Bottom, so he drove on to his sister's house on East 2nd. Grider followed, with five young men in the truck including Kendrick Smith, 19. Kalandra said  when Grider pulled in front of her house, he yelled, "I'm gonna kill ya'll." Grider allegedly got out of his truck and began hitting Shirmaine and one of the juveniles in the head, neck, and back with a shotgun.

Both boys were transported by private vehicle to Homer Memorial Hospital where they were treated for bumps and bruises, then released.

The following day, March 24, Donald Grider, Sr., 55, of Homer was arrested by the Homer Police Department and charged with aggravated battery, simple criminal damage to property, and unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling. His bond was set at $31,000.

Cold Case Files To Feature Local Murder

A film crew from Curtis Productions in Chicago was in Haynesville the week of March 15th to film an upcoming episode for the television series, Cold Case Files, that will feature the 1997 murder of 13-year-old Shannon Denise Capers. Capers disappeared from her home in Haynesville on March 8, 1997. For more than two years after her disappearance the case remained unsolved. An anonymous tip received in May 1999 led to the discovery of Caper's skeletal remains found in a shallow grave behind the Mill Street Apartments which led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Maurice Tate for her murder.

According to testimony during Tate's trial, he had gotten Capers pregnant and when she refused to fix the pregnancy, he made plans to kill her. He dug a shallow grave in the wooded area behind the apartments. The next day he lured Capers into the woods, where he had sex with her, then choked her, hit her in the head before placing her in the grave, then shot her in the head with a .380 caliber pistol before covering up the body.

In June 2003, it took a twelve-member jury less than one hour to return a unanimous guilty verdict for second degree murder. Tate was sentenced to life without the benefit of parole or suspension of sentence. He is currently serving his sentence with the Louisiana Department of Corrections.
