Homer Girl Will Be Tried As Adult In Death Of Baby

A Grand Jury convened in Claiborne Parish on Monday, October 28 regarding the drowning death of a baby in Homer on September 11, 2001. After hearing all the evidence currently available, the Grand Jury returned a first degree murder indictment on 16-year-old Yvonne Ferrell of Homer, who will be tried as an adult. According to State Trooper Kevin Baxter, Ferrell is alleged to have allowed her newborn son to drown in a toilet.

 

First Presbyterian Church To Celebrate 150 Years 
Former Minister Jack Bennett To Deliver Sermon

The Presbyterian Church in Homer will be 150 years old on Sunday, November 4, 2001. Several former ministers will be participate in the morning worship service and the afternoon history program. Rev. Jack Bennett, who served as minister from 1958 to 1964, will deliver the message entitled “Past to Prologue” during the morning worship service. Other ministers who will participate are Rev. Rodney Sunday, Rev. William D. O’Neal, Rev. Walter C. Easton, and Rev. John D. McClelland. Former member and Presbyterian minister Rev. Patricia Gladney Holland will take part in the afternoon history program.

 

Claiborne Hosts Regional Police Jury Meeting 
Resolutions Adopted On Lake Claiborne Flooding, Severance Tax Collection

Over one hundred attended the Region Four meeting of the Police Jury Association of Louisiana at Homer City Hall on Saturday, October 27, possibly the first regional meeting ever hosted by Claiborne Parish. Region Four President Gene Coleman turned the gavel over to newly elected president Ms. Gayle Roque of Natchitoches Parish. Other officers elected were Vice-President Bill Altimus of Bossier and Secretary Catherine Hamilton of Natchitoches. A.W. McDonald, Jr. of DeSoto Parish was re-elected Executive Board Member and Claiborne Parish Police Jury President J. Weldon Kilpatrick will continue to serve on the Highway Committee.

The regular meeting of the Claiborne Parish School Board will be 7 PM Thursday, November 8 following the work session at 6 PM. 
     
  • Account Set Up At Hibernia Bank For Jo Lynn Bellew - An account has been set up at Hibernia National Bank in the name of Jo Bellew to help defray medical costs and other expenses incurred during her lengthy illness. Donations can be made at Hibernia National Bank, the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office or the Claiborne Parish Detention Center. 
     
  • Claiborne Academy And Homer High School FCA To Host Veterans' Day Ceremony - The Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddles at Claiborne Academy and Homer High School will host the annual Veterans' Day ceremony on Friday, November 9., 2001. The observance will coincide with the Ford Museum's Smithsonian Exhibit and will be held in the Homer City Hall. All veterans and their spouses are invited to attend. Lunch will be served.   • Money Available for New or Expanding Businesses in Homer - The Homer Chamber of Commerce now has monies to lend through the Revolving Loan Program. Anyone who is interested in starting a business or enlarging an existing business within an eight mile radius of Homer may be eligible. These funds were received from the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program to assist small businesses and provide for jobs in Homer. Loan preferences will be made on the basis of job creation.   • Donated Items Sought For Doll Making In Homer! - Items are needed to make dolls and other gifts for Christmas--fabrics, lace, tape, ribbon, thread, sweat pants, sweat shirts, etc. Ladies meet the first Tuesday of each month at the Homer Church of Christ Annex Building on West Main to make dolls, lap robes, doll quilts, pillows, etc. Volunteers are welcome.   • Claiborne Academy Invites Former Cheerleaders To Homecoming - The Claiborne Academy Varsity Cheerleaders wish to invite all former CA Varsity Cheerleaders to cheer on the sidelines for this year's Homecoming football game on Friday, November 2, when the CA Rebels take on the Plain Dealing Bulldogs, 7:30 PM at Rebel Stadium. Former cheerleaders may wear any CA cheerleader uniform or a wind suit in school colors. Returning cheerleaders should report to the sidelines before the game to sign in for recognition at some point during the game. All former cheerleaders are asked to participate in the pre-game spirit line and to cheer on the sidelines until halftime.
