Planes Level World Trade Center, Hit Pentagon, In Suspected Terrorist Attacks

NEW YORK (AP) - In one of the most horrifying attacks ever against the United States, terrorists crashed two airliners into the World Trade Center in a deadly series of blows Tuesday that brought down the twin 110-story towers. A plane also slammed into the Pentagon as the government itself came under attack.

 

Governor's Office Promises Funding For Homer Bypass This Year 
-Town Accepts North Wall Michael's Men's Store

Mayor David Aubrey told the Homer Town Council at their regular meeting Monday, September 10 the Governor's Office had promised funding of the $8.2 million Homer Bypass project within this fiscal year. John Basilica, Undersecretary for the Louisiana Department of Transportation, said, "It is a big deal, because it is one of the only projects of its kind that we are going to do this year in the entire state." He said it is being built 100 percent with state funds from the gasoline tax voted in 1989. Bids will be let no later than May 2002.

 

Haynesville Council Votes To Hire Four Police Officers 
-To File Civil Suit Against Former Clerk Marilyn Bush 
The Haynesville Town Council voted to give Police Chief Jim Garner permission to hire four new police officers at their regular meeting August 12. New officers are Alfred Hay, John Barnette, Hessie James, and Bobby Nations. Voting for the the motion by H.U. Slaid were Slaid, Otto Black, and Kenny Killgore. Joyce Major and Alvin Kendrick voted against the motion. Following executive session to discuss employment issues, a motion by Slaid to pay police officer Larry Jones from July 20, 2001 to August 31, 2001 was unanimously approved. At that time, he may either resign or be terminated.

 

Learning Is More Than Fun In Homer Elementary Pre-K Classes

The old saying, ‘learning is fun" is more than just words at Homer Elementary. Four-year-olds in the three Pre-K classes are having so much fun they probably haven't figured out they are learning in the process. Pre-K teacher Carol Ann Odom said they still have a few openings in the three classes. Many parents may not be aware they can still enroll their children and she would like to encourage them to take advantage of the class.

 

Junction City School Board Approves Budgets, Raises At August Meeting 
Superintendent Alvin Kelly and Junction City school board members Randy Lyons, Leon Hines, John Sims, Kevin Hux, and Stan Owens met Tuesday, August 14. Kelly commended the job Chester White and Allen Simmons did to rework the inside of the band bus for carrying instruments and equipment.

 

Money Available For New Or Expanding Businesses In Homer 
The Homer Chamber of Commerce now has monies to lend through the Revolving Loan Program, according to Mac Brakefield, Executive Director of the Chamber. Anyone who is interested in starting a business or enlarging a business within an eight mile radius of Homer is eligible. Collateral must be available and credit worthiness is essential. These funds were received from the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program to assist small businesses and provide for jobs in Homer. Loan preferences will be made on the basis of job creation.   • Athens High School To Hold Open House Thursday, Sept. 20 - Athens High School will host an Open House on September 20 from 6:00-8:00 PM tonight, Thursday, September 20. All parents are encouraged to attend. At 6 PM refreshments will be served, followed by a short assembly with classroom visitations afterwards. This is a time to meet your child's teachers and to see improvements to the school If a conference is needed, it will be scheduled for a later time.

  • Corney Creek Pageant Set For Saturday, September 29 - The 2001 Corney Creek Pageant will be held at the Bernice High School Auditorium on September 29 beginning at 6 PM. Age divisions are as follows: "Baby Miss" (6-11 Months), "Toddler Miss" (1 & 2 Years), "Tiny Miss" (3 & 4 Years), "Little Miss" (5 & 6 Years), "Petite Miss" (7-9 Years), "Jr. Miss" (10-12 Years), “Teen Miss” (13-15 Years) and “Miss Corney Creek” (16-18 Years). Girls who live within a 50-mile radius of Bernice and who do not hold a current Union Parish title are encouraged to sign up. Entry fee is $40 and deadline is September 7.   • Absentee Voting For October 20 Election Will Be October 8-13 - Absentee voting for the October 20 election for District 9 Police Juror and for the Claiborne Parish Recreation District Ward 2 & 3 proposition in Haynesville will be held Monday, October 8, through Saturday, October 13. The office of the Registrar of Voters at 518 East Main will be open from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM Monday-Friday and from 8:30 AM-noon on Saturday.     • Sept 28 - A Trees Life, 9:30 am - Join the park naturalist for a nature hike to examine the different tree species found in the park. A discussion of the germination process, growth and life cycle of trees will follow.
